Finbarr Clancy, Martin Furey, Brian Dunphy and Darren Holden - renowned vocalists and musicians - have come mutually to shape the hottest Irish folk and ballad group to emerge since The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem electrified the worldwide folk revival of the 1960s. The musical producer is the highly acclaimed David Downes, who is the musical genius behind Celtic Woman and formerly the musical director of Riverdance. He delivers intricate harmonies and driving rhythms to The High Kings songbook, giving them a freshness and sparkle this is infectious. A rousing TV exclusive was filmed in Dublin and is available on DVD (The High Kings: Exist in Dublin).

Customer rating is 5 of 5  Love it   2010-07-28

I love this CD. I love the Irish sound, and I also love the music which a lot of people complain about. I love all the songs. They really do make me think of Ireland.

in preparation for my upcoming trip to irleand, and to satisfy an intellectual curiosity about my own musical roots, i have been checking out irish music cds at the library. my latest listen is a cd by the high kings. ever heard of them?

i never had, but the cover showed a group of guys, and i noted one had a low tin whistle, and another had a guitar. i recognized some of the songs they did, and they were among my new faves. i decided it was worth a spin in the laser box.

omf'ng. this is absolutely the most atrocious piece of sacrilege that i have ever had the misfortune of stumbling across. these guys can play, which makes what they've done all the more inexcusable. they have slowed down, over-fluted and otherwise aired up, and generally sucked the life out of some wonderful old folk songs. their approach is infuriatingly slow tempos, overuse of vocal harmonies, and various overly theatrical presentation, including ridiculously reverberated enya-esque percussion and booming basslines. in an attempt to make something "sweet" and "beautiful," they've done the equivalent of, well...

...picture, if you will, an old, overalled, bearded, irish man, holding in his work-worn, aged hands his whiskey or guinness. now picture that same man dressed in a tutu and tiara. that's what they've done here. it's a travesty of the highest degree. an abomination. such disrespect for something that was so unbroken it never should have prompted speculation about fixing should be prohibited by law.

also, i didn't like it.

full disclosure requires that i tell you that i've only listened to about half the cd. i'm going to attempt to listen to the other half on the drive home, and maybe tomorrow on the way to work. if, the next time you see me, i've pulled a double van gogh, you'll know why.
Customer rating is 5 of 5  The Clancies' legacy lives on.   2010-04-15
By Bryan J. Peterson (Twin Falls, Idaho United States)
Like many others I was deeply saddened to hear of Liam Clancy's death on December 3, 2009. But then I discovered that one of the members of the High Kings, Finbarr Clancy, was Liam's nephew and had played on stage with his father Bobbby and his uncles many times. Indeed most if not all the rest of this Irish quartette had at one time or another played alongside the Clancies on stage. So I was delighted to discover their self-titled debut album right here on Amazon. I purchased it after hearing some of the videos from their DVD.
The High Kings combine traditional Irish tunes with their own unique style as well as some songs of their own creation. Every song on this album is great, although I do tend to skip Galway to Graceland somewhat more often than not. But the harmonies achieved by these four men are enough to send chills down my spine. Standout tracks for me are Black Velvet Band (although they shortened it by a few verses here), Marie's Wedding, Fields of Glory, The Little Beggarman, Ar Eireann ni Neosainn Ce Hi (a beautiful Gaelic tune sung first in Gaelic and then in English)), The Auld Triangle, The Wild Rover and The Parting Glass. This last is done in the same triumphantly beautiful style as the Shaun Davey version used during the end credits of Waking Ned Devine. Personally though I think they should have closed the album out with this track, but this is a minor complaint. It's followed by a live version of one of my favorite Scots Irish tunes, The Wild Rover. So all in all this is an excellent album and I look forward to anything else the Kings send our way.
Customer rating is 5 of 5  Totally pleased and surprised - can't stop singing these songs!   2010-01-29
By Michael Kane (Southern California)
If a CD can get my 15 year old son to sing along with me, then I judge it to be a success! This album has great production values, infectious tunes, marvellous voices, and a surprisingly good percussion section! Being a fan of acapella music, I particularly enjoyed "Galway to Graceland". You don't have to be of Irish descent (although I am and it helps) to enjoy this effort by the High Kings. Some will probably complain that the whole package is too slick. I would prefer the word "professional". Thanks, lads!
Customer rating is 4 of 5  lovely, lovely men   2009-12-15

Well, I was expecting rather insipid stuff.. but I did find these guys by looking at the iTunes 'Celebrity Playlist'..and Steve Martin suggested this album. I got a few tunes, then realized that I'd probably like them all. I have.
Happy, homeland music. Not flaky. Hey, this is Irish music! Have any of the folks that have slammed this kind of stuff ever been to Ireland? Do they have any Irish blood? Do they know anything about Irish history? How much horror and pain this country has gone thru - continues to go through?
Before you thumb your nose, consider how important songwriting, being together, and maintaining pride and history in one's county matters.
I love this stuff, and I'm only 3/4 Irish. So there.
