Description

Kings of Leon return together with the open of their highly anticipated fourth album 'Only By The Night' on 22nd September throughout Columbia Records. 'Only By The Night' is a bold and expansive sonic statement this looks set to solidify Kings of Leon's position as one of the much important international acts of 2008 and beyond. It follows rapidly in the footsteps of the bands previous albums 'Youth And Young Manhood', 'Aha Shake Heartbreak' & 'For the reason that Of The Times', which have shortly established them as one of the much prolific and acclaimed acts all-around.
Despite a wave of criticism asserting this Kings of Leon's fourth full-length is "too commercial," Only by the Night may be the closest thing to a pitch-ideal album to drop in 2008. Granted, Tennessee's band of brothers (and one first cousin) takes a turn for the heavily polished here, but what the album lacks in rough-edged raunch, it extra than makes up for in earnestness and--yes--spectacular beauty. From the opening notes of "Closer" to the listing balladry of "Cold Desert," Only by the Night hardly misses a beat. Highlights abound, particularly in the trading off of melodic lines between instruments, and in this regard, bassist Jared Followill is the album's quiet MVP. Above these gorgeous instrumentals, singer Caleb emotes together with a dramatic grit this never loses its command. A model of melodic rock composition, arranged and produced together with a warm, inviting veneer, and performed together with aching sincerity, these 11 tracks coalesce into a sanguine whole this eclipses the band's much-discussed rock posturing and yields extra together with each have fun. A good band's excellent album, Only by the Night (finally) establishes Kings of Leon as a rock act this's worthy of seriously sustained attention. --Jason Kirk

Customer Reviews

Customer rating is 4 of 5  There's Just Something About It   2010-08-28
By Lady Action Fan (Illinois)
When you listen to song after song, the band's flaws become obvious even to a tin ear like myself. They don't play that well. Sounds like if they got anything too complicated to play, they'd be in real trouble. The lyrics are often awful if not downright unintelligible. "We'll teach this city to kiss these thighs" (or some such nonsense). And the singer doesn't have that great of a voice. And you can only sometimes understand what's he's singing to begin with.

But you know what? All those "negatives" come together and cancel each other out enough to make a couple of really good songs. The hook is catchy, the music just right and the singer's wail is pitch perfect. (no pun intended).

"Sex on Fire" and "Use Somebody" are my favorites. But I also enjoyed "Closer", "Revelry" and "17".

Is mainstream music so terrible that an album that has only 2 good songs is praised by millions and even awarded a grammy? WTF. I went and bought this album yesterday after hearing so many good things about it. The only good songs on this album are "Closer" and "Use Somebody". The rest of the songs are filler tracks. There are tons of other bands out there that put out albums where EVERY song is good. This is just plain and boring. Nothing stands out except for a few melody lines here and there that last 5 seconds. This is the type of music you'd hear at grocery stores, movie theatres, and places like that. There's nothing catchy about this music. I want my 15 dollars back. Next time I actually buy a cd I'll stick to the lesser known bands that actually write cool material that turns heads.
Customer rating is 5 of 5  Kings still rock!   2010-08-06
By L. Romero
As usual the Kings have created an entirely new sound! An amazing CD!A lot of energy and filled with great ballads as well as rocking songs. I wish they would've made "Frontier City" and "Beneath The Surface" actual songs ON the album, it would've been sweet. But what they put on the album was still amazing! The order of the songs is perfect and makes it easy to listen to from beginning to end.
