  • Together with all the media hype this dogged the Strokes before the open of their debut album, it's rather apt this they chose the title Is This It. On the strength of just five songs released on two singles, the Strokes were being hailed as everything from the saviors of rock & roll to the Savior himself. Surely, few bands could exist up to the impossibly high standards set for this young five-piece, but the band needn't have worried: Is This It is one of the much exciting and energetic debut albums to spring from New York's long-dormant club scene. In fact, the Strokes are a New York City band throughout and throughout; like the Velvet Underground, these are a bunch of uptown artsy types stylishly slumming downtown to the tried and tested themes of sex, drugs, and rock & roll. Their singer-songwriter, the fantastically named Julian Casablancas, brings his lyrics together with a weary nonchalance this belies his age on songs like the title track, "Soma," "Hard to Give details," and the altogether wonderful "Barely Legal." And the band recalls the likes of Television and the Stooges on "Last Nite" and "The Modern Age." Let's hope this sexy, trendy, and undeniably cool band is the future of rock & roll. --Robert Burrow

Is This It was the first album I really loved and tempted me to discover other music, so a big debt of gratitude goes to Casablancas & Co. for that. On this record, The Strokes are both tight and loose in the way they play, with Julian Casablancas' nonchalant croon hovering in the mix. Anyway, I like to keep my reviews short and sweet, so I will just say that this is an immaculate collection of well-composed pop rock songs which never seem to get old. Get it cheap anywhere, and enjoy.

When The Strokes first started being introduced to the world by music magazines, many people were stating how great they were. Heck, the only reason why I actually got the album was because Noel Gallagher (Singer, song writer and guitarist for Oasis) had stated in the band's website that The Strokes were the best band in the world and that everyone should own this album. Having said that I decided to follow one of my music idols suggestions and give it a listen.

It wasn't as I imagined, in fact it was nothing as I had predicted. They weren't "Rock n Roll", they weren't Brit Pop, they weren't Punk Rock either and as I listened more and more the first thing that came to my mind at one point was The Ramones but I knew there weren't too many similarities (except for their fashion). I played the album again once it was done and I knew at that moment that I was hooked. I probably played `Is This It' that day at least 5 times, and songs as `The Modern Age', `Someday', `Last Nite' and `Hard To Explain' probably 15. It was a sound I had never heard before (Mind you, I was 18 and still had a lot to learn from music) but I knew it was the best thing I had heard since Oasis ` (What's The Story?) Morning Glory': one of my all time favorite albums.

I first owned the US version of `Is This It' which contained `How It Started' as track #9 instead of what originally was going to be `New York City Cops' which ended in the UK version, all because 9/11 was still fresh and to avoid any wrongdoing. I ordered later through the internet the latter edition and again it stayed in my CD player for quite a while. Either way the US version delivers, and even though their weakest song was replaced by what many fans consider their best song, it is a 5/5 star album (or 10/10 for many critics).

I saw the band live at the Billboard Live in Miami Beach, Florida shortly after I had become a fan, and they blew my mind away. Their sound may not be crisp on the album, but I guess it just goes with their style, and if you've ever had the pleasure in witnessing them playing live, I can assure you will give them more respects after that.

Come to think of it after The Strokes broke into the world of music, other bands such as The White Stripes, The Hives, and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs followed and were considered also favorites from whoever liked The Strokes. I don't want to call them revolutionary but they did open our minds (And ears) with their sort of distinctive style. And for many that consider that The Strokes went downhill after their following album `Room On Fire' which was good, but not good enough to beat their debut (but then again what is?) We cannot stop to admit that this album will be in the Top 100 as best albums of all times, and also one of the best debut albums ever. Whether you love them or you despise them for A, B, C reason this is a must in your music collection.

P.S: If you're in the States and you're thinking of heading into your local record/music store to get `Is This It' I would recommend you ordering the UK version instead of getting the US one. Chances are you will only be able to get it through this source and 'New York City Cops' alone is worth the extra dollars. Enjoy!

Picking favorite tracks from The Strokes' famed debut 'Is This It' is a tremendously difficult task. Partly because every single one is so damn good, and partly because they all sort of sound the same. Julian Casablancas' melodies are absolutely beautiful, which sounds strange considering the garage rock guitars backing him, but it's true. Disappointingly, questionable production makes the album harder to listen to than it should be, but chances are you'll be singing along with the incredibly infectious songs too loud to notice.

Standout tracks: Someday, Last Night, Hard To Explain
