Description

On Ghost Of A Rose, Blackmore and Candice Night present a fascinating combination of rock music, folk and melodies from the 16th century this is interesting in each note. Blackmore sees his songs as an homage to renaissance music, and his band transpose the multi-faceted music of the Middle Ages, which blends romanticism and mysticism, passion and enthusiasm, into their very own sound together with acoustic and electric guitars, strings, renaissance instruments like hurdy-gurdy and bagpipe and Candice Night's beguiling voice. Features 16 tracks counting a bonus video track of 'Way To Mandalay'. Minstrel Hall. 2003.

This is my favorite Blackmore's Night CD. All of the tracks are great, but this is simply the best version of "Diamonds and Rust" ever done.
Customer rating is 1 of 5  blackmore's night is not the real deal   2010-01-01
By JP (Syracuse, NY USA)
Blackmore's Night is not an authentic Renaissance band. Look up blackmore's night interview(8:57) [...], Ritchie Blackmore himself says that the group is not a purist band and that is not we are all about. They advertise themselves as a Renaissance band but listen or read the interviews, then they say they are not renaissance purists. What a bunch of hypocrites this band is! They can't even be honest when they promote themselves. As the saying goes, don't believe the hype.

Here is the reason:

They take a medieval/renaissance tune and rearrange it by adding new words, new melodies, and use different instrumentation than the original tune especially by using modern instruments. They even give the tune a different name and do not tell you the original title of the tune. They also cover modern artists such as Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and even cover former bands Deep Purple and Rainbow. How authentic is that? Not at all!

As I said in another review, try the group Trouvere.

If anyone is looking for authentic early music groups, try the older artists such as David Munrow, Thomas Binkley, Konrad Ruhland, Noah Greenberg, Musica Reservata, etc. For newer artists, try Sequentia, Tallis Scholars, Piffaro, Ensemble Organum, John Eliot Gardiner, etc.

This is a nice mixture of an album. Has sad, bouncy & rockish songs. Something for everybody on this one.

Favorites: Ghost of a Rose, Cartouche, Loreley, Where are we going from here (I really, really like this one) , All for one, Diamonds & Rust
Don't like: Ivory Tower. Not crazy about Way to Mandalay, either.

I continue to listen to this album often. Every song is good and has its own atmospheric presence. I often travel to the high sierra nevada's and this album doesnt leave my cd player. I highly recommend it. Composed beautifully and sound quality is great.

I've been looking for rock/medieval music for a while and had begun to think that there wasn't anything out there other than the odd novelty. So to my extreme happiness (with a little help from Wikipedia, of all places) I came across this CD. I've never been into Deep Purple, and I never even heard of Rainbow, but this Ritchie Blackmore guy is phenomenal. And so is Candice Night. I've seen the word "ethereal" mentioned in a few reviews, and that's the perfect word to describe her voice. Clear, sweet, strong - perfect. This CD (and all the other Blackmore's Night CD's out there that I also bought) has it all - strong rock songs, sweet soft songs, awesome instrumentals. My favorites from this CD are Way to Mandelay, Ghost of a Rose, and All For One.
