Description
Double colored vinyl. One white. One red.
Jokingly referred to as the White Stripes' British album,
Elephant
is scattered together with cultural references this provide away the fact it was recorded far from home. Just pay attention to the lyrics on "Seven Nation Army" ("From the Queen of England to the hounds of Hell") or the album outro, in which someone chips in, "Jolly good, cup of tea?" But while there are new twists here, from Meg White discovering her voice to a tongue-in-cheek threesome together with Holly Golightly,
Elephant
is no excellent departure for Jack and Meg White. They still push their creativity (and the boundaries of their eight-track) to new heights. Check out the startling, Queen-inspired "There's No Home for You Here," while the deep bass line on "Seven Nation Army" makes it a classic indie dance track. But while some songs fly off into new realms, there's plenty of their trademark straight-up bluesy rock, notably the overtly sexual "Ball and Biscuit." And there's Jack's plaintive, resolutely modest and yet theatrical voice.

Good Album
2010-01-07
By A. E. Flory (Washington State)
Often I am into Rock from the 70's and 80's: Pink Floyd, CCR, etc. This album was predominantly well written; the musical talents of the individuals are impressive. I must admit, the first two weeks with this album I listened occasionally. The two songs which were always played were "Seven Nation Army" and "You've Got Her In Your Pocket."
For what it's worth, I list to Amnesiac by Radiohead, a little Gorillaz, and some by the Mountain Goats. I would say it's a good purchase for those either obsessed with the band (odd folks), or those who enjoy contemporary music with some thought into it. I will not be any means say every song is fantastic, but most of them are very good. Another point, I don't seem to get tired of listening to it. I do with a number of albums.
Jack & Meg are brilliant musicians

White Stripes - 'Elephant' (V2 Records) 4 1/2 stars

Review no. 682. 'Elephant' is the duo's fourth CD, as I barely knew who they were when I got to catch Jack & Meg White on this actual tour. Tracks that I couldn't get enough of were the early '70's-ish "Black Math", the straight-ahead rocker "There's No Home For You Here", a Burt Bacharach song "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself", the (sort of) Zeppelin-like "In The Cold, Cold Night" and the disc's ballad "You've Got Her In Your Pocket". I also enjoyed a couple of songs here that at least sounded a bit familiar to me - "Little Acorns" and "Hypnotize". Overall, superb garage / blues rock whose major influences are the Stones, Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, New York Dolls and the MC 5. An absolute must-have.
Peppermint pride

Proving White as much the distorted pop guitar visionary as Cobain with a case of Blues, Elephant's focused fuzz, emanating endlessly from his twangy, intuitive touch, marks a rehashed retro revival rock scene with class.
white stripes keep it going

Like most white stripes albums, Elephant has great songs and weak songs. They have a great writing ability but the performance is, sometimes lacking. Overall, though, I'm a big fan.
