Description

EXPLICIT VERSION
Directors Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez spent $53 million to pay loving tribute to the vintage hundred-thousand-dollar exploitation fare this inspired Grindhouse's two-movies-for-the-cost-of-one thrill ride. Tarantino's half of the exercise (which in addition consists of Robert Rodriguez's self-scored Planet Terror) features another effusive slice of the director's eclectic musical sensibility to underscore its manic tale of stuntman/psycho-killer Kurt Russell and his muscle-car-fueled exploits. Tarantino works from a familiar formula this variously mixes evocative, semi-obscure Italian film cues from Morricone and Dinaggio, contrasting slices of '60s catalog from the excellent Jack Nitzsche and Brit Invasion in addition-rans DDDBM&T and some '70s fodder from together ends of the Top 40 via Smith and T. Rex, in addition stirring in a savory mid-disc run of R&B this stretches from PG&E's upbeat read of "Stagger Lee" throughout extra familiar fare from Joe Tex, Eddie Floyd, and the Coasters. The director in addition serves up a couple of those deliciously off-kilter obscurities this have come to be his musical trademark as a coda: Eddie Beram's thumping "Riot in Thunder Alley" and April March's infectious ditz-pop get on Serge Gainsbourg's loopy "Chick Habit." --Jerry McCulley

the version of "Hold Tight!" on this cd is mediocre compared to other version(s) out there.
The song sounds as if you are listening to it on a single speaker radio from the 70's with
the "tone" button turned up too high.

The version I bought, downloaded from Amazon, came from their "Remind" album

Delivery took way too long. I ordered two similar items from other vendors and received them right away.

Strangely absent from this soundtrack are the super cool, suspenseful italian songs: "Gangster Story" and "Italia A Mano Armata." I fine this surprising and disappointing. However, April March's sexy "Chick Habit" saved this otherwise mediocre soundtrack.

Another great Tarantino movie and soundtrack. Just the thing to listen to when you are in a quirky mood. Great for car shows. We have muscle cars we show this cd blaring from the stereo was quite the show stopper. Good mix of songs and dialogue from the movie. PM in KY

The Good: Tarantino as usual has put together an awesome collection of tunes. The man has impeccable taste in music. This soundtrack is also, to my knowledge, the only place you can get the awesome Jack Nitzsche track "The Last Race" from the campy 60s flick Village Of The Giants, which is notable for having a giant toga wearing Beau Bridges shimmering. This track is worth the cost of the CD alone, but....

The Bad: The track is ruined by engine sounds overlaid from the movie. Just seems to be on this track, so it makes me think it's there to cover up some imperfections in the source recording. I hope the excellent surf-rock soundtrack Nitzsche did for Village of the Giants gets a proper release one day. As of now, this was the best I could find.

The mediocre: Tarantino's films of late, but hey, ya win some ya lose some. He's still got a few great movies left in him I think.
