Description
Like the first album, Contra was produced by keyboardist Rostam Batmanglij and is the realization of a whole and distinctive musical vision this sees the band stretching out and adding new textures, instrumentation, and rhythms into their sound.Primarily recorded in New York together with a springtime sojourn to Mexico, Contra feels altogether fresh, joyous, and like nothing else but is immediately recognizable as the sound of Vampire Weekend.

Contra- A great Sophmore album from a great band.

From the second Vampire Weekend released Horchata on their website, I was all over this album. They stay true to their original sound, yet their experience shows with many of the later songs on the track listing, in particular, "Giving up the Gun" and "Diplomat's Son". A great follow up and a must buy if you enjoyed the self titled release.
Horchata: Great way to start off the album. Upbeat and catchy.
White Sky: Really demonstrates some of the new techniques VW has admitted to trying, mainly using "voice" as an instrument.
Holiday: Sounds as though it could have been on the first album. Still a good song, but there are better tracks.
California English: A very unique song. VW's tribute to Californians. Interesting use of Auto-tune mixed with some fast guitar.
Taxi Cab: The album's turning point. A slower song
Run: Fast, catchy song with a great horn section.
Cousins: The lead single, and for good reason. A catchy tune with a good amount of guitar. The "A-Punk" of Contra
Giving Up the Gun: Their second single off of Contra. A great song, evenly paced.
Diplomat's Son: The best song off of the album. Incredibly catchy. This song again, implements VW's use of "voice" as an instrument, even sampling M.I.A. for small portions of this track.
I Think UR a Contra: A slow song to finish the album, picks up near the end.
Great follow-up to one of the greatest albums of our time

Vampire Weekend are an indie band that made their debut in 2008. It was an awesome album. Very great album. They go even harder on their sophomore album, "Contra." let me tell you, this album is extremely great. Maybe even better than the first album. Every song on this album is great. "White Sky," "Cousins," "Horchata," "Diplomat's Son," and "Giving Up the Gun." Every song is great. The album is truly a triumph. These guys definitely deserve to go far, go beyond the indie label XL, which this album and their 2008 self-titled debut album were released on. VW is awesome!!!!!!!
Highly recommended

Great album! I think I like this one even better than their first one. They have a great feel good sound that makes you want to sing and dance along.
Awesome fun, better than the first

It took me a couple of listens through the entire album to appreciate the changes. But I love it more than their first release which was energetic creative and full of South African cultural references. My favorites are Diplomat's Son, Cousins, Run, Horchata, White Sky...

Dracula Holiday continues to chase the 1980s version of Paul Simon on their latest hodgepodge, "Contra" -- which means that on top of annoyingly milk-chocolate sweet ditties, these whippersnappers are anti-Sandinista. Which presents a dilemma: Support a continued (word that is pronounced FASH-IST) regime in Nicaragua, or lose out on some serious finger-snapping yet ultimately emotionless prattle. What to do?
It's just a cellophane facade decorated in big-toothed, youthful smiles and fabric-softened perspiration. I was tickled to find out that Dracula Holiday has jumped onto the long-ridiculous Auto-Tune bandwagon on the abusive "California English." Sometimes it seems these kiddos just have too short a collective attention span to settle on any particular style, but they're not alone. A lot of these "hobbyists" are rambling in an ocean of too many sounds, paddling in a circle. It's resurrectional and parasitic. A rainbow leaking skunks. Skittles infested with exploding maggots.
By the time, eyes bleeding and nails digging into my ears in a vain effort to end the suffering, I was subjected to "Cousins," a puppy-love D&D nostalgia tale set to a groove more fitting for a balloon animal routine at a 6-year-old's birthday party than a band trying to make a name for itself, I called up ol' Nosferatu on his white blood cell phone and told him I couldn't make it to the vacation house. Speaking of which, this band titles itself with what I would like to challenge is the stupidest name for something in the known or as-yet-undiscovered universe(s).
