Like the first album, Contra was produced by keyboardist Rostam Batmanglij and is the realization of a whole and distinctive musical vision this sees the band stretching out and adding new textures, instrumentation, and rhythms into their sound.Primarily recorded in New York together with a springtime sojourn to Mexico, Contra feels altogether fresh, joyous, and like nothing else but is immediately recognizable as the sound of Vampire Weekend.

After thoroughly enjoying their self-titled debut, I was looking forward to "Contra". Unfortunately, I was very disappointed. I'm not a very technical music critic, but I know what sounds good to me. "Contra" sounds too contrived and intentionally kooky to be taken seriously. Maybe that's the point, but it just doesn't appeal to me. No offense to those that enjoy it, I just can't get on board with it, that's all.

There are 99 reviews of this disc on Amazon, so I am not sure why I am bothering. Anyway, it is a complete mystery to me why so many people seem to like this; it is the musical equivalent of drinking three and a half litres of Evian - it made me feel vaguely queasy.

This is basically Enya for people who think (and are inclined to congratulate themselves that) they know better.

I was impressed with the band's last offering and like everyone else I was anxious for Contra. I was a little concerned when I saw the reviews averaging 4 stars from a band that has a strong following. Now that I have heard this cd many times I see why. It is good but not great. I think 3 stars is probably a more fair assessment. You really don't have those big hits like the last album, nor is it as deep. If you are a Vampire Weekend fan than go for it just don't expect too much.

this group is finally a new band i wanted to buy the actually physical albums...i do that rarely... they are very unique...if ur a "student of music" in any form ull appreciate what they're trying to do and how unique they really are
