Description

The follow up to the band's critically acclaimed debut 'Youth And Young Manhood', consists of the first single 'The Bucket'. The band recorded the album together with Ryan Adams, Counting Crows producer Ethan Johns over five weeks in Studio City, California. RCA.
Nomadic Southern evangelist Leon Followill may get soap suds to the mouths of the kinfolk wunderkinds--his three sons and a nephew--in Tennessee quartet Kings of Leon, whose second album spins enough cuss phrases and sexual allusions to go away Dolly Parton flushed. But the peculiar 20-something longhairs in addition fuel up on a filthy shotgun bass and relentless guitar riffs, complementing the delightfully discordant drawl of vocalist Caleb Followill to whittle a 35-minute grab bag of garage rock, English blues, sixties psychedelia, London Calling-ska, spaced-out country waltzes and front-porch, red-state revelry. Not including revising its 2003 debut Youth & Young Manhood, producer Ethan Johns (The Jayhawks, Ray LaMontagne) steers the band down a similar mischievous road, integrating poles-apart rhythms and techniques into an energized jumble of rotating tempos and lyrical bombshells. Putting faith in earth-shakers like "Velvet Snow" and "Pistol Of Fire," the wound down and pleasing "Milk" and its yodeling cousin "Day Old Blues," the Kings ultimately escape Preacher Leon’s retribution, rendering him speechless--save for a neat "amen." --Scott Holter

Customer Reviews

Customer rating is 4 of 5  Aha Shake Heartbreak   2010-03-25
By Morton (Colorado)
The thing that sets this appart from the rest of Kings Of Leons other albums is this one actually feels honest as opposed to severally overblown production dissasters. Namely Only By The Night, which it in itself is a fantastic album but should have been much better in all honesty.

Aha Shake Heartbreak is raw, angsty, honest, pure, rock n' roll, and too good to be over played on the radio for two years at a time. It's got a southern feel. But not a Lynyrd Skynyrd southern feel, more of a georgia peach in a sunday dress swinging on a tire swing sort of southern feel. It's got a sort of poor mans elegance that just feels right. A garage band appeal mixed with a sleazy arena rock attitude.

'Four Kicks' rocks nice and hard, while 'Where Nobody Knows' has a almost hopeless somber approach. The level of varitey on the album is surprising for a band so young.

Aha Shake Heartbreak was the album that earned Kings Of Leon the opening slot on U2's How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb tour, if The Edge takes notice of your music, you must have done something right

I love their most recent CD but this one is still my favorite. This CD has a more unique, original sound than the most recent one.
